LONDON, Oct 24 (Reuters) – Britain’s government set out around £600 million ($800 million)of funding on Saturday largely geared towards defending against health and security threats from artificial intelligence.
Backed by up to £200 million from OpenAI and Anthropic and £100 million from Government, the “world-first” unit will help to develop medical “countermeasures” for new pathogens, officials said.
Advances in AI are creating unprecedented opportunities for scientific discovery, but they are also changing the biological risk landscape. AI can accelerate research, improve our understanding of diseases, and support the discovery and development of new medical countermeasures. However, increasingly capable AI systems also create new biological risks and could lower barriers to harmful activity.
